The Rain Room

I heard about the Rain Room back in 2012 and have been aching to see it ever since.  It is an art installation that is comprised of a room/space that has perpetually falling water that falls through a grate covering the floor.  When you walk towards the water, however, a sensor near the spout detects your movement and shuts the water off.  This means that you can walk directly into and through the falling water and remain dry the entire time.

Once again, it’s hard to not shoot an art film when you don’t have a story or script or characters or actors or anything, but it’s always fun.

Street Stream

I walk to and from work nowadays.  Sure, it takes me only five minutes to drive to work but I like the fresh air and exercise and I prefer to spend forty minutes walking over forty minutes driving most of the time.  I saw this on my way to work on morning.  Watching water do this has always been one of my private pleasures; a zen moment that you have to be at the right place at the just the right time to catch.  So I shot it and discovered that it is very difficult to make a film anything other than artsy when there is absolutely no story or narrative involved.

Which is not such a bad thing sometimes.

Predict This! Music Video

I narrated my first non-fiction book this past winter and I found the experience very pleasant.  The book is Predictive Analytics: The Power to Predict Who Will Click, Buy, Lie, or Die by Eric Siegel.  I have always been wary of reading non-fiction aloud as I had the impression narrating would be boring without any characters or plot to portray, although I have read some fiction that apparently had both but lord help me if I could tell the difference.

But this book was very much fun to read and all of the credit goes to the author, Eric, whose humorous style blends history, anecdotes, technobabble, nerd culture, and some truly fascinating ideas that is the stuff science (non)fiction is made of to create a warm introduction into a field that would send most of us screeching with utter abandonment.

Included in the audiobook (which will see its own post here soon enough) is the funky rap tune “Predict This!”–an all-original song, also written by Eric.  It can be quite catchy, so don’t go blaming me when you find yourself humming it.  And if you keep your eyes  peeled, you will see someone familiar around 3:10.

For long time readers, some of you might recognize Bradford from AirSWAT.  We made this a couple of weeks ago, into the second week of the United States Government Shutdown.  We conceived, wrote, filmed, edited and published the video faster than it took the government to get its shit together, which is both fascinating and extremely disturbing.

You know, I don’t think an explanation is fitting here.  While it’s sort of a cop-out to rely on the bizarreness by not giving an explanation, I’m not entirely sure that explaining exactly what is going on would help you understand it any more.  Just know there were goats around the stage, doorknobs sticking out of the ground, and baskets filled with spoons nailed to the walls.

It’s been awhile since I set myself to posting in my other categories, and since I found myself starting to go crazy once with the lack of creative output once again, I have planned out posts for the rest of the year.  I won’t be posting daily as I did in my first year, but I will be publishing in two more categories a week (for the doodle and animal lovers out there, I will continue posting Cartoons and Animal Thoughts every week).
